Early Childhood Care and Development:
Healthy Mothers, Healthy Children
World Vision International Nepal considers the under-fives a particularly vulnerable group. A priority for World Vision International Nepal is to provide children up to the age of five with their basic needs and rights – healthy nutritious food, protection and safety, and appropriate learning opportunities through play. World Vision International Nepal supports child nutrition and maternal health for early childhood care and development in all the districts of Nepal in which it works. As a part of early childhood care and development initiative, Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres are built. These centres are managed by community committees and staffed by trained childcare facilitators and assistants. Currently, World Vision International Nepal provides support to young children and mothers in more than hundred ECD centres it has helped establish. Health check-ups, treatment, medicine distribution, de-worming and growth monitoring for under fives are some of the activities carried out in the pre-school programme of ECD centres. World Vision International Nepal also works with pregnant women and parents to improve knowledge of childcare, health, nutrition and sanitation. The 'Comprehensive Nutrition Projects' in Sunsari, Lamjung and Jumla works towards sustainable reduction in the rates of malnutrition among children under three and pregnant women.
